Which one fits you
Watt4 is the better pick if
- you don't want to pay for your training
- you want to ask why a session is there, and change the plan by talking to your coach
- you ride without a power meter and want heart-rate targets
- you run as well as ride, and want both planned as one training load
TrainerRoad is the better pick if
- you train indoors a lot and want one app that runs your workouts on an iPhone, iPad, Android or computer
- you want your workouts inside Zwift, or on a Hammerhead or Apple Watch
- you race triathlon and want swim, bike and run workouts in one plan
- you like picking from three suggested workouts on the day, with TrainNow, instead of following a plan
Price
TrainerRoad costs $21.99 a month, or $209.99 a year ($17.45 a month), and every membership includes every feature. On the web it charges in US dollars only, so outside the US your bank may add a conversion fee; in the eurozone App Store it is €24.99 a month or €229.99 a year. There is no free trial: first-time members get a 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
Watt4 is free while we are building it. There is no card to enter and nothing to cancel.
How each plan adapts
TrainerRoad AI, trained on millions of rides, chooses each workout and predicts how hard it will feel from your training history, performance and recovery. When your outside rides get too long or too intense, it adds rest or easier workouts. Plan Builder lays out your season around your races in base, build and specialty phases, and when you're not following a plan, TrainNow suggests three workouts (endurance, climbing or attacking) for the time you have.
In Watt4 you set the time you have on each weekday and how many sessions you want a week. When something comes up, you mark the day off with a reason (travel, illness, work) and the week is planned again. A ride that went harder, shorter or differently than planned also moves what comes next. Your races go on a calendar as main goals, important races or training races, and the season builds to the next main goal through base, build, peak and taper.
A coach you can talk to
TrainerRoad's AI works in the background: it picks and adjusts your workouts, and you work with the plan in the calendar, for example by swapping a workout for an easier, harder, shorter or longer alternate. Its website and app listing describe no coach you can message.
Watt4 has an AI coach you can message. Ask why today is a recovery ride, what last week's intervals say about your form, or for a 45-minute session because that's all the time you have. Tell it you can't ride on Thursday and it proposes the change to your plan; nothing changes until you approve it.
FTP without testing
Both set your FTP from the riding you already do. TrainerRoad's AI FTP Detection uses every ride with power data, indoors or out, once it has imported training data or 10 TrainerRoad indoor workouts, and offers a new FTP about every 28 days, which you accept or decline.
Watt4 estimates your FTP from genuinely all-out efforts across different durations in your rides, and shows it on your Progress page. If you ride a ramp test, Watt4 reads that too. You can accept the estimate or enter your own.
Indoor training
This is TrainerRoad's home ground. Its app runs structured workouts on your smart trainer on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and macOS, and it can send them into Zwift. Outdoors, today's workout goes to your Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead or Apple Watch.
Watt4's indoor rides happen in Grimpa, a free indoor cycling app built by Watt4. Every cycling session has a Ride in Grimpa button: one click and your trainer holds the watts in ERG mode while you ride a real climb such as Mont Ventoux. Grimpa runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android, not on iPhone or iPad. You can also send a session to Garmin or Wahoo with one tap, or download it as a Zwift workout file.
Power meter or heart rate
TrainerRoad's workouts are power-based. It works with a smart trainer, a classic trainer with a speed sensor (TrainerRoad estimates your power from it with VirtualPower), or a power meter, and AI FTP Detection needs power data.
Watt4 works with or without power. When your rides have no power, it switches your targets to heart rate by itself, and the workouts you send to your device carry heart-rate targets.
Questions
Is Watt4 a free alternative to TrainerRoad?
Yes. Watt4 is free and, like TrainerRoad, adapts your cycling plan as you ride and estimates your FTP without a test. TrainerRoad costs $21.99 a month or $209.99 a year. TrainerRoad does have things Watt4 doesn't, such as its own indoor app on iPhone, iPad and desktop, workouts in Zwift, and triathlon plans.
Does TrainerRoad have an AI coach you can chat with?
TrainerRoad AI picks and adapts your workouts, but TrainerRoad's website and app listing describe no chat. Watt4 has an AI coach you can message about your training and your plan.
Do I need to do an FTP test?
Not with either. TrainerRoad's AI FTP Detection and Watt4's FTP estimate both work from the rides you already do. TrainerRoad's needs power data; without a power meter, Watt4 sets heart-rate targets instead.
Do I need a smart trainer or a power meter?
For TrainerRoad you need a way to measure power: a smart trainer, a classic trainer with a speed sensor, or a power meter. Watt4 works with heart rate alone. To ride Watt4's sessions in ERG mode in Grimpa, you need a Bluetooth smart trainer.
Does TrainerRoad have a free trial?
No. First-time TrainerRoad members get a 30-day money-back guarantee instead. Watt4 is free, so there is nothing to trial.
Can I use Watt4 on my smart trainer?
Yes, through Grimpa, a free indoor cycling app built by Watt4 that uses your Watt4 account. One click on a session opens it there, and your trainer holds the watts in ERG mode while you ride a real climb. It runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android, not on iPhone or iPad. You can also download a session as a Zwift workout file, or send it to Garmin or Wahoo.
What do I need to switch from TrainerRoad to Watt4?
A Garmin account with your rides on it. Watt4 reads your last three months, estimates your FTP and fitness from them, and plans your first week straight away.
