Watt4 vs HumanGO

Both are AI coaches that build a plan around the time you have and change it when your week changes. HumanGO and its coach Hugo plan swimming, cycling, running and strength, and connect to almost every watch and app. Watt4 is free and built for cyclists: it estimates your FTP from your rides, talks the plan through with you and lets you ride your sessions up a real climb in Grimpa. Looking for a HumanGO alternative? Here is where the two differ.

  • you want sleep, HRV and resting heart rate from your watch, ring or WHOOP to shape the plan
  • you use COROS, Suunto, Polar or an Apple Watch and want everything to sync
  • you coach other athletes and want AI plans for them

Price

HumanGO has two plans, after a 14-day free trial with everything in Premium. Essential costs $16.99 a month or $155.99 a year and holds one single-sport goal at a time. Premium costs $28.99 a month or $264.99 a year and adds several goals at once, multisport goals, Hugo's recalibration tests and a race-day pacing planner. Those are HumanGO's prices in US dollars; in the eurozone App Store, Essential is €19.99 a month or €179.99 a year, and Premium €29.99 or €299.99.

Watt4 is free while we are building it. There is no trial to run out and no card to enter, and nothing is held back for a higher plan, including several races on your calendar.

One sport or three

HumanGO is built for endurance athletes in several sports. Its plans cover swimming, cycling, running and strength, with triathlons from sprint to full distance, duathlons, and running goals from 5K to the marathon. If you race triathlon, that is a real advantage: one plan balances all three sports.

Watt4 is a cycling coach first. It plans your rides, and if you run as well, it plans your runs around them on your threshold pace and counts both as one training load. It doesn't plan swimming or gym sessions.

How each plan adapts

Both change the plan by themselves. In HumanGO you set the days and times you can train, and Hugo adapts the plan to your availability, your progress, the health data from your wearables and your feedback. When something comes up, you update your availability and get a new plan.

In Watt4 you set the time you have on each weekday and how many sessions you want a week. When something comes up, you mark the day off with a reason (travel, illness, work) and the week is planned again. A ride that went harder, shorter or differently than planned also moves what comes next. Your races go on a calendar as main goals, important races or training races: the season builds to the next main goal through base, build, peak and taper, with nothing hard in the days before an important race.

A coach you can talk to

Both have one. HumanGO says you can ask Hugo questions, and that it can make changes such as scheduling a day off, raising or lowering the intensity of your workouts, or noting an injury or illness.

Watt4's coach has your whole riding history in front of it. Ask why today is a recovery ride, what your last interval session says about your form, or for a 45-minute session because that's all the time you have. It remembers what you tell it across chats, such as an injury or the bikes you ride. When it suggests a change to your plan, it shows you what would move, and nothing changes until you approve it.

FTP and power

HumanGO's Premium plan includes Hugo's 1-day and 2-day recalibration tests: high-intensity assessments that update your thresholds and training zones.

Watt4 estimates your FTP from the rides you already do, by looking for genuinely all-out efforts across different durations, and shows the estimate on your Progress page. You don't need to schedule a test, and if you do ride a ramp test, Watt4 reads it. If you know your FTP, enter it and Watt4 uses yours. Without a power meter, it switches your targets to heart rate by itself.

Devices, indoor riding and recovery data

Here HumanGO is clearly ahead. It imports activities from Garmin, Strava, Wahoo, Zwift, COROS, Polar, Suunto, Apple Health, Peloton, Rouvy and more. It reads resting heart rate, HRV and sleep from Garmin, Apple Health, COROS, Fitbit, Oura, Polar, Suunto or WHOOP. And it sends workouts to Garmin, Wahoo, COROS, Suunto, Apple Health, Zwift, Rouvy and your calendar.

Watt4 reads your rides from Garmin and sends a session to Garmin or Wahoo with one tap, or as a Zwift workout file. For indoor riding, every cycling session has a Ride in Grimpa button. Grimpa is a free indoor cycling app built by Watt4: your smart trainer holds the session's watts in ERG mode while you ride a real climb, in Chrome or Edge on a computer or Android. Watt4 doesn't read sleep or HRV: it eases today's session when your fatigue runs high or when you tell the coach you're ill or sore.

Questions

Is Watt4 a free alternative to HumanGO?

Yes. Watt4 is free and, like HumanGO, builds an adaptive plan around your availability, with an AI coach you can message. HumanGO costs $16.99 a month for Essential or $28.99 a month for Premium after a 14-day free trial. HumanGO does have things Watt4 doesn't, such as swimming, strength and triathlon plans, sleep and HRV data, and sync with many more devices.

What is Hugo?

Hugo is HumanGO's AI coach. It builds and adapts your plan and, according to HumanGO, answers your questions and can make changes such as a day off or easier workouts. Watt4's coach does the same kind of job for cyclists, and shows you every change to your plan before it happens.

Which is better for triathlon?

HumanGO. It plans swimming, cycling, running and strength for triathlons from sprint to full distance. Watt4 plans cycling and running only.

Do I need to do an FTP test?

Not in Watt4: it estimates your FTP from your normal rides. HumanGO's Premium plan includes Hugo's 1-day and 2-day recalibration tests, which update your thresholds and zones.

Does HumanGO have a free trial?

Yes, 14 days, with everything in Premium. After that you choose Essential or Premium. Watt4 has no trial because it is free.

What do I need to switch from HumanGO to Watt4?

A Garmin account with your rides on it. Watt4 reads your last three months, estimates your FTP and fitness from them, and plans your first week straight away.
